Improved Weather Forecasted for Central and Eastern Brazil

Much of central and eastern Brazil, which has been hot and dry for several weeks, may get a reprieve soon. Metrologists in Brazil indicate that the models are calling for daily increases in precipitation for Mato Grosso, Goias, Minas Gerais, Sao Paulo, and parts of Parana. The models indicate limited precipitation for Mato Grosso do Sul.

If the rains are forthcoming, there is still plenty of time to plant soybeans and subsequently safrinha corn next February. Heavy rains over the weekend favored southern Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Mato Grosso and western Tocantins. Rain this week is expected to be heaviest across southern Brazil with scattered showers in central and northern Brazil. Rainfall will increase across central and northern areas in the 6-10-day period.

There are reports that some farmers in the central region may have to replant their soybeans due to inadequate germination. That is always a concern in central Brazil if farmers plant after the first rain with subsequent rains delayed for several weeks, while temperatures soar to 40°C (104°F) or higher.

Replanting will impact the farmer's bottom line, but it may not result in lower soybean yields. As long as the weather during the remainder of the growing season remains favorable, a few weeks delay in planting may not affect the eventual yield.

Eastern Brazil is usually one of the last areas of Brazil to start planting soybeans. Soybean planting also starts later in the southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul since most of the soybeans in that state are double cropped after the wheat is harvested. Below are some starting dates for soybean planting in central and eastern Brazil.
